Ette

Homemade Lemonade

(Olive Grove)

THE TITLE is sweet, if perhaps a little self-effacing, and the packaging maybe the most beguiling of the year so far, so Hoorah! that the contents of this debut from Carla Easton, made in just five days with the production and instrumental assistance of Joe Kane of Dr Cosmo's Tapelab, also turn out to be very tasty indeed. With an album from the group she fronts, Teen Canteen, eagerly anticipated before the end of the year, this is rather more than an amuse bouche, and more complex than the "psychedelic synth-fused pop" that she has described it as herself.

Including both a sure-fire summer hit in Heaven Knows and the lovely Yule song Spending Every Christmas With My Boy that was half of Ette's "Special Occasions" calling card at the tail end of last year, it opens with the wonderful girl group-loving statement-of-intent that is Attack of the Glam Soul Cheerleaders, but then shuffles the pack completely for Bonfire, which features superb toasting (as distinct from rapping) by Leroy "Shines" Moncrieffe. Full of such varied sonic – and sometimes aptly Spectoresque – treats, it also sparkles with melodies and some very deft and witty lyrics (especially on Fireworks and My Mother Says). A homegrown musical triumph.
