Family owned Laidir Leisure has been snapped by German firm Sport-Tiedje Group for an undisclosed sum.

Laidir, which has its headquarters in Clydebank and trades as Powerhouse Fitness, supplies a wide range of fitness equipment and owns the Bodymax brand.

It has nine retail stores across the UK, including two in Glasgow and one each in Aberdeen and Edinburgh, and was said to have a £22 million turnover in its most recent financial year.

Founded in 1980 by David P Webster the business has been run by his sons, Nigel and David, since the mid-1980s.

Nigel said: “We are immensely proud to have grown this business and we see a bright future for the Powerhouse Fitness brand as part of the Sport-Tiedje Group.”

The Powerhouse brand is being retained and the more than 90 staff at the company are also staying on.

Christian Grau, chief executive of Sport-Tiedje Group, which has 30 stores in central Europe, said: “We are excited to acquire Powerhouse fitness which is a strong player in the UK fitness market.

“Sport-Tiedje Group is Europe’s number one in home fitness and we have a clear international expansion strategy with the focus to further strengthen our position.

“We are looking forward to integrating Powerhouse within the group.”

Angela Toner, corporate finance partner at RSM in Scotland, which advised on the deal, said: “This deal puts the combined business into a very strong position as it looks to take advantage of international growth opportunities in the home fitness retail sector.”
