OATCAKE maker Nairn’s is moving its gluten-free factory from Edinburgh to Midlothian in a £6 million investment.

The company said increased consumer demand meant its current gluten-free site at Craigmillar had reached capacity, and would move to a new gluten-free factory in Newtongrange in October.

The move would see a fall in permanent staff from 30 to 27. Another 30 temporary workers would not have their contracts renewed.

The company’s main Craigmillar premises and its 135 staff will not be affected.

Nairn’s is currently the UK’s number two producer of gluten-free products, according to Mintel.
