EDUCATION officials and staff have paid tribute to a teacher who was struck and fatally injured by a train earlier this week. Police yesterday officially identified the dead man as Graham Smith, 34, a school teacher of Lilac Cottage, Bankend Road, Dumfries.

Mr Smith, a geography teacher at Dumfries High School, was struck by the Carlisle to Kilmarnock passenger train on Monday at Brasswell, a mile east of Dumfries.

Police have been investigating his death but say it is not being treated as suspicious.

Mr Kenneth McLeod, director of education for Dumfries and Galloway said yesterday: ''He will be fondly remembered as a committed and enthusiastic teacher of geography. He also gave freely of his time for the wider life of the school.''
