A man was beaten by a gang in an attack police think was mistaken identity.

The 23-year-old was walking with friends along Victoria Road, in Queen's Park, when he was jumped by four or five other men.

The group kicked and punched their victim near to Maybank Lane.

Although the man was on his way to a supporters' bus, he was not wearing colours and so police do not believe the incident was football related.

Instead, they think the victim was mistaken for someone else.

The gang ran off in the direction of Langside Lane when fellow supports stepped off the buses and rushed to his aid.

The buses are then said to have left the scene without waiting for the Good Samaritans to return.

He suffered a serious eye injury and was taken by police to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital where he was treated and has since been released.

The only description of the attackers involved in the assault on Sunday at 1.30pm is that they were all white, wearing dark tracksuits and hoodies.

One had on a ‘bubble’ jacket and another a grey t-shirt or hooded top. No details have been given on age or height.

Detective Constable Jennifer Adams, Cathcart CID, said: “The injured man and his friends were heading to a nearby pub to get on a supporters’ bus when he was attacked.

“At this time, there is nothing to suggest that the incident was football related. The buses weren’t targeted and the young man wasn’t wearing colours.

"Indeed, from our investigations so far, it is possible that the four or five men picked him believing he was someone else, however, this has still to be confirmed.

“Supporters from the buses outside the pub came to the man’s aid but the men responsible made off – as did the buses - prior to police arrival.

"So, I would appeal to anyone who saw what happened or where the suspects came from or ran off to, to contact police.

“Officers are checking CCTV and had been speaking to local businesses but we need either those on the buses or who were in the area to get in touch.”
