Millions of people will today flip pancakes while celebrating Shrove Tuesday.

The tradition, also known as Pancake Day, marks the eve of Lent and is enjoyed by people across Britain and throughout the world.

But the art of pancake making may be dying out in Britain, with a new survey revealing that almost one in three people claims to have never cooked one from scratch.

The poll of 500 people found that 41 per cent were unable to name the three ingredients that go into pancakes, while a quarter of those surveyed have never made them with their children on Pancake Day.

Almost one-third of young people told the survey, commissioned by Community Channel, that they never make the meal from scratch, compared to only 14 per cent of those aged between 35 and 44.

Maggie Sims, of the Children’s Food Trust, said: “Cooking is a life skill that every child needs to learn if they’re going to grow up to be healthier adults.”
