Ruth Davidson took to the skies as she went on a coast-to-coast trip across Scotland meeting first-time Tory voters.

The Scottish Conservative leader travelled by helicopter as the Holyrood election campaign entered its final 48 hours.

One of those she met, former Labour Inverclyde councillor Yvonne McNeilly, claimed Labour had been "unbelievably ineffective" in opposition at the Scottish Parliament.

She said: "I never thought I would see the day where I would have voted Conservative, or joined the Conservative Party, but when you mention Ruth people know that what they are seeing is someone who is genuine.

"Never in my wildest dreams did I think we would end up with Jeremy Corbyn as leader of the Labour Party.

"I think the Labour Party in Scotland have been unbelievably ineffective as an opposition, they have not landed a glove on Nicola Sturgeon, they have been riven by in-party fighting.

"Effective opposition - it will only be Ruth and her team that will be able to do that."

Ms Davidson urged Scots to vote for her if they want the SNP, which is on track for another Holyrood majority, to be held to account.

She said: "It is a big step to vote for a new party for the first time.

"But as I've said throughout this campaign, this isn't a normal election. The SNP is on course to win. So the decision here isn't whether you're a Conservative or not, it's whether you want a strong opposition or not.

"You don't have to agree with everything my party says to back me in this campaign. You just have to want the SNP held to account.

"If you use one of your two votes for me, then I'll do a specific job for you. I'll hold the SNP to account, say no to a second referendum on independence and make the Scottish Government concentrate on the things that matter to you and your family.

"On Friday, I'm ready to step up."
