A pro-Israel group is campaigning against the SNP candidate for Glasgow Kelvin Sandra White.
Glasgow Friends of Israel has produced leaflets which highlight a “repellent and offensive” post on Ms White’s Twitter account, which was later removed.
The image showed six piglets - representing the UK, the US, Israel and terror groups Islamic State, Al Qaeda and Boko Haram - suckling at a sow with the word “Rothschild” and the Star of David on it.
Ms White said she had not intended to retweet the picture, and had deleted it when she realised what had happened. The then Glasgow Kelvin MSP later apologised.
In a letter to the Scottish Council of Jewish Communities (ScoJec) she wrote: “I would like to take this opportunity to apologise unreservedly for the offence that has been caused by my accidental retweeting of this offensive image which I too find repellent and offensive.
“I had not intended to retweet this picture, and was horrified to learn that I had done so. As soon as this was brought to my attention, I deleted the tweet.
“Anyone who knows me or has known me over the many years I have served in public office will know of my love and tolerance for all peoples; all faiths and all religions.”
However, Glasgow Friends of Israel are campaigning against her with a leaflet which is being distributed in Glasgow Kelvin.
It states: “Did you know that in Nov 2015 Sandra White MSP circulated a highly offensive caricature based on blatant anti-Semitic stereotypes…?
Urging constituents not to vote for Ms White, it adds: “The SNP is already heading for a victory at the Scottish Parliamentary Election on May 5th. So, even if you are an SNP supporter please think twice before re-electing this candidate as your constituency MSP.”
Sammy Stein, Co-chair of Glasgow Friends of Israel, who is behind the campaign against Ms White, said: “I don’t believe Nicola Sturgeon took a strong enough stance. That tweet was an obscene anti-Semitic caricature. If it had happened today she’d have had to suspend Sandra White. I’m very disturbed that someone like Sandra White is standing again.”
An SNP spokesman said: “Sandra White has worked tirelessly for the communities of Glasgow Kelvin since becoming their MSP in 2011, and will continue to do so if re-elected this week.
“Sandra wrote to the Scottish Council of Jewish Communities to apologise unreservedly for the offence cause by her accidental sharing of the image concerned. She retweeted this image in error and finds the views it represents offensive. She deleted the tweet as soon as she was made aware of it.”
Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
