A ginger cat has been abandoned at a park in Glasgow’s east end.

The owner is believed to have taken the animal to Tollcross Park in a pet carrier on May 23.

Scotland’s animal welfare charity, the Scottish SPCA, said the carrier was found with the door open.

The cat, which has been named Jefferson, was sitting a few metres away.

It is now in the care of the charity’s animal rescue and rehoming centre in Hamilton.

Animal Rescue Officer Robyn Lewis said: “The person who contacted us said they saw a woman with a child and a sheepdog walk into the park with a cat carrier and come out without it.

“When they went to investigate they found the carrier with its door open and Jefferson sitting a few meters away. There was a tin of food inside the carrier along with some toys.

“Thankfully they managed to get a hold of Jefferson and put him back into the carrier before calling us for assistance.

“Jefferson is now doing well in our care and we will look after him until we can find him a loving new home.”
