Controversial comedian Frankie Boyle has made a donation to a charity set up in memory of murdered teenager Paige Doherty.

The Glaswegian comic donated protective equipment to Paige's Promise which will provide self-defence classes for kids.

The charity eventually hopes to roll out classes in Glasgow and provide support for families affected by tragedies.

Paige's heartbroken mum Pamela Munro revealed the celebrity donation on the social networking site Facebook.

She said: "Would just like to say a massive thank you to comedian Frankie Boyle who has donated protective equipment for the self-defence classes to get up and running.

"Can't thank him enough for his generosity."

Teenager Paige was on her way to collect her wages from her part-time job as a hairdresser after staying over at a friends' house when she went missing on Saturday, March 19.

Her body was found 48 hours later in a wooded area just off Great Western Road in Clydebank, West Dunbartonshire.

John Leathem, 31, of Clydebank, was charged with the murder of 15-year-old Paige.

He has made no plea or declaration after two private court appearances and has been remanded in custody.

Pamela, 32, set up the charity to keep her daughter's memory alive.

She said of Paige: "She was always helping other people.

"Everybody always commented on how helpful a wee girl she was.

"She would always want to give back and her being taken from us has made us want to do that."

She added: "Not everybody can afford to send their kids to defence classes or martial arts classes because it is expensive. This way it is paid for by Paige's Promise.

"They don't know need to worry about those costs and they know that their child will have that basic knowledge to defend themselves if something was to happen to them.

"I am not going to say it will save everybody but hopefully if it saves somebody it's a bonus."

Paige's Promise will also create a befriending scheme to help the siblings of young people who died in tragic circumstances.

Fundraising for the charity will continue through a benefit concert, a black-tie event and a football tournament.
