I ENJOYED Alan Clayton's letter (July 22), and should say that he is both right and wrong. There is a common misconception that "homo" in the word "homosexual" comes from the Latin "homo, hominis" meaning man or mankind whereas, in fact, it comes from the (Ancient) Greek "(h)omos" meaning "the same". Thus "homosexual" is one attracted to the same sex. The literal meaning of the "new" word "homophobic", to which your correspondent refers, is thus, in its customary context, a hatred of persons of the same sex.

Such is the ingenuity, however, of the English language that the regular erroneous usage of the word has overcome the error so that "homophobic" now is accepted as properly meaning hatred of homosexuals.
