UNLIKE Mark Boyle (Letters, 28 July), I find the station announcer at Glasgow Central quite outstanding for her clarity and diction. Tannoys are notorious for distorting and mangling speech but I really feel that this announcer should be up there with the best at the RSAMD.
That said, it’s always interesting how perception through the senses can vary so widely from person to person. Mr Boyle quite obviously hears what he hears. I can only hear Lanark. But is Wemyss Bay meant to be pronounced “Weems Bay” or “Wims Bay”? That’s one I’ve never been clear about.

I NOTE with interest Mark Boyle’s letter regarding disconcerting announcements at Glasgow Central. Why on earth is "alight" used in railway announcements instead of "get off" or (if that conjures up the old joke of outgoing passengers being exhorted "come on, get off") simply "leave"? Few if any Brits would now say or understand that, let alone our poor visitors.

Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
