Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher looks heavenwards while visiting the Glasgow Garden Festival in 1988 as if she even expected the seagulls of Glasgow to pass judgement on her visit. By her side was her ever supportive husband Denis. Somewhere in the archives of Scottish Television is a reporter who approached her at the Garden Festival and wanted to talk instead about her appearing that afternoon at the Scottish Cup Final. He asked: “Prime Minister, are you worried at all about the reception waiting for you at Hampden?” Before she could reply, Denis jumped in with: “Oh come on, get the hell out of it.”

Maggie instead concentrated on the festival, which many credited with being the catalyst which began the rebirth of Glasgow. “Absolutely marvellous,” she said. Some 4m people visited
