FUNNY how a couple of lines in a newspaper can infuriate. In her Agenda contribution (“Benefits to be had from roll-out of smart meters are boundless”, The Herald, April 28) Claire Maugham writes: “in 2016 … the world’s largest taxi company owns no cars …” and then later poses a question as to who will be the next Uber.

Uber is not a taxi company, but a “ride sharing service” which charges its “associates” 25 per cent of their income, which in return for the Udeaber iPhone app requires its associates to supply a car, insurance, fuel, sickness and holiday pay and pension provision, which takes no responsibility for the wellbeing of drivers, who can obtain their vehicles from another associate company at advantageous rates (for the company) if they are unable to access credit.

Yes, welcome to the future.
