YOUR On This Day section (The Herald, July 28) stated that the last public hanging in Scotland was of Dr Edward Pritchard, on July 28, 1865. This is incorrect. The last public hanging in Scotland took place on May 12 1868, when Robert Smith, aged 19, was publicly hanged in Dumfries for murder.

On May 29, 1868, 17 days after Smith was hanged, an Act of Parliament came into effect which banned public executions.
