SCOTLAND assistant Mark McGhee has refused to rule out the possibility of him becoming the new Motherwell manager.
McGhee was in charge at the Lanarkshire club from 2007-09 and as of yet has not been one of the 100-odd applicants who have submitted a CV to be the one to replace Ian Baraclough. However, the 58-year-old is not closed off to the notion of returning to his former parish.
He said: "I have been complimented that people around me and people that I know have associations there have suggested it would be a good thing for me and a good thing for them.
"But the people there know me and I have total respect for that. If someone was interested in talking to me, I'm sure they would get in touch but that has not been the case either way."
Meanwhile, Motherwell managerial top target Simo Valakari has moved to within two games of clinching the Veikkausliga in Finland with minnows SJK.
The former Fir Park midfielder’s side moved two points clear of league leaders RoPS at the weekend with a 2-1 win over Ilves.
That result was followed up by a shock defeat for their title rivals away to Mariehamn last night, meaning the path is clear for Valakari’s club to win the championship for the first time in their history.
The 42-year-old is anticipated to be on a shortlist of candidates to be interviewed later this week by Motherwell’s football committee.
Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
