Celtic vs Ajax: how the home team rated:

Craig Gordon: Didn’t have huge amounts to do for all Ajax’s attacking intent. Can consider himself unfortunate at the equaliser having done well to keep out Viktor Fischer’s shot only for the loose ball to rebound to the forward who set up Arkadiusz Milik, and left exposed at the winner too. 6

Mikael Lustig: Had his hands full trying to keep tabs on the ever-busy Amin Younes meaning little was seen of him in an attacking sense. 5

Jozo Simunovic: Stayed injury-free and not to blame for the loss of the goals so decent enough evening for the Croat in comparative terms. Late scrappy chance from a corner but couldn’t convert. 6

Dedryck Boyata: Still a player that seems to spark panic among the Celtic support whenever the ball is within a 10-metre radius but this was one of his more reliable performances. 6

Kieran Tierney: Solid. Solid as a rock. Another terrific display from the teenager. Does not hesitate to get stuck in, one thundering first-half challenge receiving the Parkhead roar of approval. Always keen to get forward as well, setting up Griffiths for a decent chance. 8

Tom Rogic: Deployed initially in a deeper midfield role with Celtic carrying more walking wounded than the cast of MASH. Some neat touches, always looking to keep play ticking over, but not as effective at the spoiling side of the game. Would have been happy to have seen the offside flag go up when he failed to score from six yards out. 6

Callum McGregor: Mixed night for the young Scot in his first start in two months, with a goal and then the mistake that led to Ajax’s equaliser. There didn’t look much on after four minutes but a burst of acceleration took him to the edge of the box and the finish was perfect. Blotted his copybook, however, by giving away possession that led to Celtic’s lead being cut short, before rattling the crossbar midway through the second half. 6

James Forrest: Didn’t get much joy out of Ajax left-back Mitchell Dijks, prompting a second-half switch to the other wing where he was more productive. 7

Stuart Armstrong: Afforded the much-coveted No.10 role but couldn’t get close enough to Griffiths to drive Celtic up the park. A quiet evening. 5

Gary Mackay-Steven: Another frustrating night for the winger who seems to be completely out of sorts. Didn’t seem able to get down the left flank at all, and not much more involved when moved out to the right. 5

Leigh Griffiths: Not the most productive night for the striker although he still ran his heart out as if there were a box of teacakes waiting for him on the Ajax goal line. Missed a great chance late in the game to win it only for Jasper Cillessen to save his effort when he probably ought to have scored. Beyond that only half-chances came his way. 6

Subs:

Charlie Mulgrew (for Rogic 66): Pushed on for his first game in more than two months. Headed corner over then limped off injured. 4

Scott Allan (for Mackay-Steven 72): Rare sight of the one-time Hibs player. Early pass set up Griffiths who couldn’t convert and then booked, before giving ball away for Ajax winner. 3

Emilio Izaguirre (for Tierney 78): Helped stop Ajax scoring a third. 4
