Brazil's men take on South Africa in Group A, while defending champions Mexico kick off their campaign against Germany.

The opening ceremony takes place in the Maracana Stadium, while the individual ranking rounds begin in archery.

August 6

Hannah Miley gets her Games under way in the 400m individual medley as the swimming programme begins. Chris Froome looks to add gold in the men's road race to his Tour de France titles.

August 7

World champion Lizzie Armitstead goes for gold in the women's road race while Britain could also see a medal in the pool as world record-holder Adam Peaty is expected to contest the men's 100m breaststroke final.

August 8

Britain's James Guy will be hoping to add Olympic gold to the world title he won in 2015 in the men's 200m freestyle.

August 9

The eventing competition concludes with showjumping as Britain look to match - or go one better - than their London 2012 team silver.

August 10

Froome has another chance to win gold in the men's road time-trial, while Emma Pooley makes her comeback from retirement aiming to go one better than in Beijing, when she won silver.

August 11

Scotland’s Katherine Grainger begins her defence of the double sculls title alongside Victoria Thornley. The men's rugby sevens competition reaches a conclusion, and in the velodrome, Sir Bradley Wiggins begins his bid for a fifth Olympic gold in the opening round of the team pursuit.

August 12

The athletics gets under way with Jessica Ennis-Hill and Katarina Johnson-Thompson getting their heptathlon battle started. In tennis, Andy and Jamie Murray will also hope to be in action as the medals are decided in the men's doubles.

In rowing, Helen Glover and Heather Stanning defend their pairs title.

August 13

Another potential Super Saturday as Greg Rutherford bids to retain his long jump title, Mo Farah goes for another gold in the 10,000m and Ennis-Hill and Johnson-Thompson complete the heptathlon. Further medals could come at the velodrome with Katie Archibald and Laura Trott among the members of the women's team pursuit looking to defend their title.

August 14

In the tennis, Andy Murray will hope to be in position to defend his men's singles title.

In the evening all eyes will be on the track as Jamaican superstar Usain Bolt bids for a third straight 100m title.

August 15

On the track, Kenya's David Rudisha will try to retain his title in the men's 800m, while 2008 champion Christine Ohuruogu is set to battle American Allyson Felix in the women's 400m.

August 16

Britain could claim three medals on the final day of action at the velodrome, with the omnium (Laura Trott), men's Keirin (Jason Kenny) and women's sprint (Becky James) all coming to a conclusion. In boxing, defending champion Nicola Adams will expect to have reached the quarter-finals in the women's flyweight division.

August 17

Britain's Shara Proctor should be a strong contender for a medal in the women's long jump final, while team-mate Tiffany Porter will have similar aspirations in the 100m hurdles. The taekwondo gets under way with Britain's Jade Jones out to defend her title in the 57kg category.

August 18

The Brownlee brothers will carry Britain's hopes in the triathlon with Alistair defending his title and Jonny also expected to battle for a place on the podium.

Injury permitting, Bolt will be a massive favourite to win the men's 200m, where Britain's Adam Gemili will look to give the Jamaican a run for his money.

August 19

Former world champion Liam Phillips will hope to contest the BMX final and erase the memories of crashing at the same stage in London 2012.

August 20

Mo Farah will race for what he hopes to be a second gold of the Games in the 5000m, while Lynsey Sharp faces the formidable challenge of South Africa's Caster Semenya in the 800m. The last athletics action sees the fast and furious 4x400m relays for men and women. Diver Tom Daley faces the semi-finals and final of the men's 10m platform in his bid to improve upon a bronze at London 2012.

August 21

The latest edition of the Dream Team will be expected to claim basketball gold for the United States.
