Team GB is taking its biggest team ever to an overseas Olympics, meaning there are plenty of medal opportunities.
Among athletes going for gold is Duncan Scott, a Scottish swimmer who is set to compete in his second Olympics.
Despite being only 24, the Glaswegian has already had lots of experience competing on the world stage, having had his first World Championship podium finish in 2015.
Deemed a "one to watch" by Team GB, here's everything you need to know about Scotland's Scott ahead of the games...
Who is Duncan Scott?
Born in Glasgow, Scott was taught to swim by his Dad in a pool in Troon, before joining South Ayrshire swim club.
There, he met coaches Mike and Marie who he credits with teaching him to streamline.
He attended Strathallan school on a sports scholarship, and at the age of just 17, competed for Team Scotland at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games, where he won silver in the 4x200m freestyle relay.
It was an achievement the Stirling University athlete multiplied four years later on the Gold Coast, when he became the most decorated swimmer ever at a Commonwealth Games having won six medals.
However, Scott is no stranger to success against the world's best either: the 6ft3 athlete has won a host of titles, including two Olympic silvers and gold in the World Championships, all in relay events.
His talent is multi-disciplined, holding British records in the 100m and 200m freestyle, as well as the 200m medley.
In Tokyo, he will look to add some individual Olympic medals to his already packed trophy cabinet, and goes into the games feeling well-prepared: "I’ve probably had some of the best racing experiences over the last 12 months comparatively with the rest of the world.
"I’ve been really fortunate with what I’ve been able to do. What British Swimming and the ISL (the International Swimming League) have been able to put on, I’ve been really lucky.
"I’ve had competitions in the calendar which have gone ahead and British Swimming have been able to put on different things. So I’ve been really fortunate."

It will be a very busy games for Scott, who will contest a range of different events:
- Men's 200m Freestyle (July 25/Jul 26/Jul 27)
- Men's 200m Individual Medley (July 28/Jul 29/Jul 30)
- Men's 4x100m Freestyle (July 25/July 26)
- Men's 4x200m Freestyle (July 27/July 28)

Five Scottish swimmers have travelled to Tokyo for a chance at success in the pool.
Fellow Stirling University alumni Ross Murdoch, Kathleen Dawson and Cassie Wild join Scott, as well as Lucy Hope from Edinburgh University.
