Cameron Mason has made history by winning Britain’s first-ever elite men’s medal at the European Cyclo-Cross Championships.

At the event in Pont Chateau in France, Mason produced the best ride of his career to finish in second place behind defending champion and gold medallist, Michael Vanthourenhout of Belgium.

Mason made a strong start and was inside the top ten in the early stages of the race despite the treacherously muddy conditions.

As the race progressed, the heavens opened but the 23-year-old from Linlithgow was unperturbed, moving steadily through the field to find himself out on his own in second by the penultimate lap and he was able to keep the field at bay to cross the line in second place.

It was Mason’s second silver medal of the week after being part of the GB team that finished second in the team relay on Friday.

His GB teammate, Zoe Backstedt, won the women’s under-23 title.
